Pet rabbits don't need grooming, but there are definitely times at which you'll want to grab a pair of scissors and carefully trip your bunny. Sometimes, a rabbit's feces will stay attached to the clear fur beneath the animal's tail, and form into a ball. If the rabbit itself cannot reach this area to chew, and you don't have a second rabbit that has helped to groom his or her mate, the rabbit will be left with an ever-growing ball of feces that is a visual eyesore. While you can attempt to soak the rabbit's backside in water to loosen the feces, a simpler solution is to remove it with scissors. Here's how.
Pick Up And Hold The Rabbit
It's ideal if you can complete this grooming task with two people, as doing so is easier than performing it yourself. One person should be in charge of picking up the rabbit, while the other can do the trimming. Some rabbits are used to being picked up, but unless you do so regularly with your pet, it may not like the experience. Scoop the rabbit up with one hand at its chest and the other supporting its back legs to avoid the aggressive kicking that many rabbits do upon being lifted. While continuing the hold the animal firmly, turn it over so that its belly is exposed.
Feel Around
Rabbits may not overly enjoy being picked up, but get a lot more relaxed once they're on their backs. Many rabbit enthusiasts refer to this as going into a "trance." While you shouldn't lighten your grip on the animal, you'll appreciate that once you're holding it with its belly facing upward, it's not moving as much — something that will make the grooming task a lot easier. The person in charge of the trimming should feel around the debris and identify exactly where to cut so as not to nip the rabbit's skin.
Use The Right Scissors
While any pair of scissors will allow you to easily slice through the rabbit's fine hair and remove the feces, you don't want to risk stabbing the rabbit should it decide to flinch at an inopportune time. Pet scissors with rounded tips will make this job safer for the bunny and less stressful for you. Snip away the feces, check to confirm that everything is gone, and then it's time for the person holding the animal to gently turn it back over and set it down. If you have trouble with this task, seek help from an experienced pet grooming company like All Creatures Inn.
